The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was built by Lonrho East Africa and the Jane Goodall Institute in 1993. The sanctuary is located within the 24,000-acre Sweetwaters Game Reserve near Nanyuki, Kenya. These chimpanzees have been collected from orphanages and from members of the public throughout East Africa.
The Sweetwaters Rhino Reserve covers an area of 10,000 hectares, and is located on the Ol Pejeta ranch. Ol Pejeta is located on the equator, about 260 kilometers north of Nairobi near Nanyuki.
